As mentioned in previous flyers, NJR is entering a (hopefully) short-term
rebuild in 2025. We're looking to shed what little veteran talent we have
for younger players and/or picks. Other than the two RFs listed at the top,
all of the below players can be had for later draft picks and lower-grade
prospect types.
*SF Yastrzemski/TEX Garcia* - With Ohtani at DH, I don't have the
flexibility to keep both of them, so one of them has to go. Yastrzemski
will have a much better card in IBL 2025 - .757 OPS vs. RHP, can play as
the strong side of a platoon. Garcia is more for teams looking toward 2026:
He regressed massively in all facets of the game in MLB 2024, but I
personally think he played hurt most of the year and he had an offseason
procedure done on his knee. If you believe in a bounceback, he may be your
guy.
*SEA Turner* - Good option for a contending team with a hole at 1B. 117
OPS+ in MLB last year, a solid .354 on-base percentage and is full-time at
1B. He just turned 40, so he's obviously a very short-term option, but you
could do worse.
*SEA Rojas* - Part-time option at 3B or as a utility man. Can't hit LHP a
lick but had a 104 RC+ vs. RHP. Well above average defender at 3B according
to most defensive metrics and typically has excellent bunt ratings.
*BOS Paxton *- If you need a #5 starter for cheap, Paxton is available. He
"ate" 100 innings in MLB last year and won't have as many injury days as
years past. He's retiring, so no future value, this is a cheap rental card.
*SD Musgrove* - Similar to Paxton, pitched almost 100 innings and had
injury trouble. Should have a weird reverse split card: LHB just a .619 OPS
against him, but RHB clobbered him. His elbow gave out in the playoffs and
he had Tommy John Surgery, so his future value is unknown/limited.
*ARI Mantiply *- An option if you miss out on the top LH relievers in the
draft. Mantiply held LHB to a .553 OPS last year, allowed just two home
runs and had a 53% ground ball rate. Solid middle reliever.
*ARI Sewald* - Injuries set him back last year, but he held RHB to a .628
OPS, struck out nearly 10 batters per 9 innings and can be had for very
cheap. Still a free agent in MLB, but will likely latch on in someone's
bullpen with his resume.
