Wait....don't delete yet...hear me out. OK, I know he was really bad this
past year, but here is my pitch for a team that is rebuilding and needs
some fliers and has the ability to get him his 240 PA usage.
1. Before this year, he had a 110 wRC+ in two seasons over 700 AB. I don't
think he has any star potential, but I think he has shown the ability to
hit MLB pitching.
2. He is still just 27 years old and on a bad team, so his roadblock to PT
are not as large as with some teams.
3. Looking at his numbers, he struck out less than 20% of the time, so his
bat to ball skills aren't bad. He also suffered some bad ball in play luck
(.222 BABIP) as well. My stat analysis is that he just stopped driving the
ball and is getting killed because he is pulling off the ball
(effectiveness has gone down while pull% has gone up) and I suspect he has
fallen prey to the launch angle/pull craze and his "adjustments" have made
him worse. Why does this matter? Because I think he is a small tweak from
becoming effective again.
4. So genius, if you believe in him, why not keep him yourself? Well, the
short answer is that OF is the strength of my team with 5 keepers already,
so getting him usage will be incredibly difficult.
5. After publicly telling many teams I hate him (which isn't altogether
false) and with him being on my original cut list, I have now decided that
he is a better bet than the late, late, round player I would get instead so
I plan to hang onto him, see if he has adjusted, and then try to trade him
next year if he gets off to a good start.
6. This is where you come in. If you are a rebuilding team with some
COF usage space, I will take an 8th round pick for him. I am not delusional
that he isn't a project, but if you still have a little bit of faith in
him, a 8th rounder now, with a full year to get him slop time usage may be
better than paying a 6th or 7th rounder and 1/2 a year of usage time left
if he returns to what he was two years ago. If you are one of the teams
picking into the 9th round, the difference between the 8th and 9th may be
non-existent anyway, so why not take a stab?
So, did I convince you? My lines are now open for business.
