WILLIAMSTOWN THUNDER WIN FIRST IBL CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to Andrew Selder and the Williamstown Thunder for their
first IBL championship in franchise history, prevailing in five games over
the Canberra Redbacks. Congratulations also to Joel Roberts for winning
his first NC Championship with the Redbacks.

Williamstown won game one behind a dominant eight shutout innings by Max
Scherzer by a score of 3-0. Joe Mauer's two-run single and Bryce Harper's
RBI knock accounted for the runs.

In game two, Canberra held a 3-1 lead in the sixth when Joe Mauer struck
again with a two-run single to tie it. In the seventh, Xander Bogaerts
drove a 2-run home run to right center for the lead. The Thunder held
a one run lead with two outs in the ninth when Adam Lind lined a base hit.
A perfect throw nailed George Springer at the plate to end it and WMS
had a 2-0 series lead.

Game three was played in the rain. It was scoreless until WMS rallied for
five runs in the bottom of the third. J.T. Realmuto drove in one with a
single, Wilmer Flores brought home a pair with a double, then Byron Buxton
capped the scoring with a deep fly home run just fair down the left field
line. Canberra rallied for three runs in the fifth, behind a Devin
Mesoraco RBI double and a 2-run single by Freddie Freeman. They got
another run closer in the eighth on an RBI double by Yan Gomes. Matt
Albers nailed down the save, getting the last four outs, and Williamstown
won 5-4 again.

Home runs by Freddie Freeman and Bryce Harper made the score 1-1 early
in game four. Harper and Freeman each drove in another with a single to
make the score 2-2. Then the bullpens took over, and nobody could score
as the game went deep into extra innings. Finally, in the 16th inning,
Eddie Rosario led off with a double and later came home on a Nolan Arenado
sacrifice fly. Wade Davis came in and nailed down the save and CAN came
away with the victory.

Hoping to end the series and avoid a trip back to Canberra, WMS sent Max
Scherzer to the mound in game five against Robbie Ray. Freddie Freeman
greeted Scherzer right away with a home run. But in the second, WMS
came alive with six hits and six runs, with Joe Mauer in the middle of
it again with a two-run double. CAN closed the gap with two runs in the
seventh to make it 6-3. But that's as close as they could get and WMS
wrapped up the series with the win. Max Scherzer's two victories earned
him the series MVP award.
