WMS Takes 3-2 Lead in Division Series
Games 3, 4, and 5 were played this evening. The games at PHI got off to
an anti-climactic start as game 3 was rained out and all 3 games were
pushed back a day.
Game 3 featured PHI ace Clayton Kershaw going up against Taijuan Walker.
WMS got off to a hot start with Aaron Altherr hitting a 2 run bomb that
the wind just helped over the center field fence. Taijuan Walker was
dominant allowing just 1 run thru 7. Mike Moustakas chipped in a solo
shot and the WMS bullpen closed it down with Matt Albers picking up the
save.
Game 4 was a battle of aces as Max Scherzer faced off against David
Price. The game started exactly like game 3, but in the opposite
direction. Kyle Seager hit a 3 run shot in the bottom of the 1st to
stake Price to an early 3 run lead. Scherzer settled down and didn't
allow another run, but was pulled after three innings. He gave way to
Jose Urena who pitched 4 innings of stellar relief, allowing a single
run. Price was dominant however and WMS scratched out just one run in
the later innings as Kimbrel came in to lock down the win. The one
bright spot of the day for WMS was that Max Scherzer's short outing will
allow him to be available in game 7 if needed
WMS got a boost heading into game 5 as Corey Kluber returned from injury
to face Tanner Roark. Kluber pitched an absolutely dominant 7 innings,
not allowing a sniff to PHI. WMS scattered a couple runs here and there
and took a 4-0 lead into 9th. Edwin Diaz came into close things down,
but got into some trouble along with getting 2 outs. Matt Albers was
called on to take the ball and get out of the jam. Albers got Jesse
Winkler to hit a harmless grounder to preserve the WMS win.
The series shifts back to Williamstown for games 6 and 7 with no off day
thanks to the rain. Luckily, it's a short 4 hour drive up I-87, so the
players shouldn't be too exhausted.
WMS looks to close out the series in game 6 as Luke Weaver will face
PHI's Jake Faria in a rematch of game 2. If needed, game 7 looks to
feature two of the games best pitchers as Scherzer is slated to line up
against Kershaw.
