And what a game seven it was, as MNM came back to threaten in the 9th but
couldn't quite pull it off. Gettysburg clinched a spot in the NCLS against
ODM, their 3rd National Conference Championship Series in 8 years. GTY
took the early lead in game 7; after MNM put up one run in the first on a
Lucas Duda double, the Generals hung 5 singles on Dallas Keuchel (one with
an additional error by Iron Glove award winner Torii Hunter) to plate 2
runs in the first. In the second, a Jason Rogers walk was followed by a
Michael Brantley shot over the wall in right field to put GTY up 4-1.
Daniel Murphy cracked a home run off Cody Anderson in the 5th, but GTY
answered in the bottom half with a run scoring single by Odubel Herrera.
Lorenzo Cain made the score 5-3 in the top of the 7th with an RBI single,
but in the bottom half, Rogers cracked a double in the gap, and Michael
Brantley once again went deep, hitting a mammoth blast (98 on the roll) to
left-center field off of Mark Lowe. Up 7-3 in the 8th, the Generals turned
to Tony Watson to ice the Millers, but he promptly gave up 2 runs on a
Jordy Mercer RBI single and a Jonathan Lucroy sac fly. Once again GTY
answered with a DJ LeMahieu double and an RBI double by (you guessed it,)
Michael Brantley in the bottom half, giving GTY a 8-5 lead heading to the
last frame. Mitch Moreland led off with a single, and Watson was pulled
for Fernando Rodriguez, who got an out on fielder's choice before giving up
a single, a fielder's choice RBI, and a walk to pull MNM within 2 runs with
runners on 1st and 2nd. Rodriguez then put everything he had into his last
3 pitches, and struck out Marlon Byrd to clinch the game and the series.
All was well in Gettysburg until it was discovered that Cody Anderson
suffered a strained bicep muscle flexing in the clubhouse after the game
and is slated to miss 18 games - effectively taking him off the roster for
the duration of the playoffs. With Kenley Jansen also hurt in the series
and out for the conference championship series, fans are wondering how the
Generals stand a chance against perennial powerhouse Oaksterdam.
