[IBL] Casper Ghosts Win Game 1 4-3 in 11 Innings

Casper, WY -- Casper Ghosts blew a lead, rallied to tie in the 10th, and
then won the game on a Jon Jay two-out single in the 11th inning in the
first game of the 2014 IBLCS. The victory, which followed a controversial
blown call in the top of the 11th, wasted a stellar pitching performance by
Chicago starter Greg Holland and key homeruns off the Cougar bench from
Alfonso Soriano and Andre Ethier.
The Cougars threatened in the first as Ryan Braun led off reaching on an
error and was stranded on third base. After that, however, neither side
was able to mount any threat off either starter s both Holland and Madison
Bumgarner spun gems of starts.
In the bottom of the sixth, an infield single by Josh Satin with one out
was Casper's second hit of the game. After an error from Holland put
runners on first and second, Holland was lifted in the scoreless tie for
super reliever Koji Uehara. Two batters later, Hunter Pence singled in a
couple of unearned runs and the Ghosts had staked Bumgarner to what looked
like a massive 2-0 lead.
But just a couple of batters later, with two outs in the seventh, an Ian
Desmond single led to the introduction of pinch-hitter Alfonso Soriano.
The Ghpsts countered with their top right-handed reliever Chris Withrow,
who immediately served up a deep fly gopher ball to tie the game.
Neither team threatened again until the bottom of the ninth when a Mike
Trout leadoff double was followed by a free pass to Hunter Pence and a
double steal (on a hit and run BLK). But Wil Myers struck out and
pinchhitter Marco Scutaro hit a trickling grounder to third. Trout looked
certain to score as a 4, but needing to roll under a 79, Trout rolled an 80
and was nabbed at home and the Cougars escaped to extra innings.
Andre Ethier, who had entered for Soriano to play centerfield, then hit a
one-out home run in the top of the tenth inning to take a lead for the
Cougars. But it wasn't to last as the Ghosts maunfactured a run in the
bottom of the frame on singles from Jose Reyes and Mike Trout.
The 11th started with a bang as designated "hitter" Jeff Baker doubled for
the Ghosts. He was replaced by pinchrunner Juan Pierre, who immediately
took off for third. Replays showed Pierre made it, but he was called out
on a blown call to eliminate the threat.
In the bottom of the frame, a one out walk to Scutaro was followed up by a
goround out and an RBI single from Jay to end the game.
Game 2 will be at 9 Eastern on Sunday night. Pre-game show starts at 7 pm
on The Ocho.
