As we head into the final games of the year, Santa Fe fans are becoming
concerned. There was a great deal of hope as the the Dogs played
near-.500 ball for much of the second half of the year. A late rash of
injuries and poor play has left them needing to win at least twice
against Havana, just to match last year's record.
This past series against NYK serves as a microcosm of the season.
For the first game, U2 front man Bono was scheduled to sing the National
Anthem. His travel agent, unfortunately, didn't recognize the*New* in
New Mexico. Bono ended up in Guadalajara. When he tried to enter the US
at the border crossing in El Paso, he was detained long enough to miss
the game completely.
Game 2 saw former UNM standout Brian Urlacher throw out the first pitch.
Salvador Perez did what he has done all season - he allowed the throw to
get by him for a passed ball.
The series concluded with Fan Appreciation Day. The guest of honor was
supposed to be the mythical Last Fan in the Stands. He wasn't home when
the team called to tell him of the choice. An hour or so later, he
returned the call. In a long, rambling, barely coherent message, the
only thing that could be made out were, "can't make it," and something
about "Betty Ford."
